About Us...
Welcome
to the McGuire Program. We are a program run by recovering and
recovered stutterers. We have recovered or are recovering from
our stutter. We understand the tricks and avoidances
associated with stuttering (the physical struggle to get the
words out, the unpleasant thoughts relived each time we speak)
and what it takes to overcome this.
The McGuire Program is a holistic program dealing with the whole
person, as opposed to concentrating upon the mechanics of
speech. The program provides a technique to assist one to
physically overcome the speech blocks and challenging words. It
imparts an understanding of the physiology and psychology of
stuttering as well as encouraging self-acceptance.
The program assists individuals to overcome the fear of speaking
by concentration, assertiveness and non avoidance techniques. It
explains relapse and how to deal with it should it occur. It
demonstrates how to challenge and change lifelong negative
traits. The program also introduces individuals to public
speaking.
The program recognizes that dismantling the psychological
framework that a person who stutters develops to support his/her
lifelong stuttering behaviour does not occur overnight.
Consequently, graduates are encouraged to return to future
courses on as many occasions as they wish. They become empowered
by coaching others, in addition to aiding their own recovery.
In addition to this lifelong membership, there is an extensive
support network that includes the allocation of a personal coach
to each new client; support groups; and telephone lists
(allowing contact with experienced members of the program
worldwide); there is also a dedicated email group to facilitate
internet exchanges between members.
To overcome a lifetime of stuttering, and the accompanying
emotional baggage that has accumulated it is tough we understand
the effort that is needed and lend support throughout. We won’t
ask anyone to do what we are not prepared to do ourselves. For
many graduates of the program the positive energy has filtered
into other areas of their lives.
